STORY LINE:
Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language historical epic film written and directed by Mani Ratnam, based on the 1955 novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Sarathkumar, and Keerthy Suresh. It is the first installment in a two-part film series, with the second part scheduled to be released in 2023.
The film is set in the 10th century during the Chola Empire. Emperor Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) is on his deathbed, and his two sons, Aditya Karikalan (Vikram) and Arulmozhi Varman (Karthi), are vying for the throne. Aditya Karikalan is the elder son and the rightful heir, but Arulmozhi Varman is more popular among the people. Kundavai (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), Sundara Chola's daughter, is determined to see her brother Arulmozhi Varman on the throne.
Vandiyathevan (Jayam Ravi), a loyal warrior of the Chola Empire, is tasked with delivering a message from Aditya Karikalan to Kundavai. The message is that Aditya Karikalan is willing to step aside and allow Arulmozhi Varman to become the next emperor. However, Kundavai is not convinced, and she believes that Aditya Karikalan is plotting to usurp the throne.
Meanwhile, the Chola Empire is facing a number of threats. The Pandyas are planning to invade the Chola territory, and the Pallavas are plotting to overthrow the Chola dynasty. The Chola Empire is also facing internal dissent, as some of the vassals are unhappy with the way the empire is being run.
Vandiyathevan must use all of his skills and cunning to deliver the message to Kundavai and to help the Chola Empire overcome its challenges. Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 is a grand and epic film that tells the story of a young prince who must rise to the challenge of becoming the next emperor.
